The Bible on Women Speaking in Communities Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she EATETH, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness, Proverbs 30:20 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth, 2 Timothy 3:6-7 Scientific Evidence that Men and Women are Designed Differently Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them; For the deeds of his hands will be paid back to him. As for my people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. My people, those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths, Isaiah 3:11-12 The mighty men of Babylon have stopped fighting. They have dwelt in strongholds; their might has withered; they became as women; they have burned their houses, her bars are broken, Jeremiah 51:30 "The husband is the head of the family. He may choose any reasonable place or mode of living, and the wife must conform thereto", California State Law "The husband is the head of the family. He may choose any reasonable place or mode of living, and the wife must conform thereto", Ohio General Code of 1910 Punishing women with branks and gags
And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. Leviticus 27:3 But if the priest's daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father's house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father's meat: but there shall no stranger eat thereof, Leviticus 22:13 When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, [and] set them on fire: for it [is] a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will shew them no favour, Isaiah 27:11 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Romans 7:2-3 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 1 Corinthians 7:34 But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ, 1 Corinthians 11:3 [read: Jesus is not the head of woman. Jesus is the head of man. Man is the head of woman, and God is the head of Jesus. Women must be obedient to their men, not to God nor to Jesus.] For God is NOT [the author] of CONFUSION, but of peace, as in all communities of the holy people. Let your women keep silence in the communities: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their man at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in assembly, 1 Corinthians 14:33-35 Wives, subject yourselves to your own husbands, as to the Lord, because a husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is Head of the assembly, and He is the Savior of the body. But even as the assembly is subject to Christ, so also the wives be to their own husbands in everything, Eph 5:22-24 Wives, submit yourself to your husbands, for that is what you should do as Christians. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them, Colossians 3:18 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered, 1 Pet 3:7
Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety, 1 Timothy 2:11-15
The relationship of the wife to the husband is thus represented by the following words:
A first class example of why such Scripture is so valuable to this day are the immortal words of Klunt.
See how different translators viewed these critical words:
Following responses from adulteresses, feminists and others who attempt to blaspheme the Word of God and change the meaning of "prophetess" to "teacher"
Original post in red, rebuttal in navy blue:Even my wife was ticked off by the following feminazi statement. Please don't cancel your subscription to "How to Win Friends and Influence People": <<<Some controlling men>>> It's REQUIRED by God that men "control", otherwise they reject God's Orderly Arrangement. You may retort "some over-controlling men", but that leaves the topic wide open about WHO decides that, and someone who espouses feminism so forthrightly is not the person I would want to decide just HOW much is too much in my life. Betty Friedan would be proud of you, but then she HATES the Word of God:
How can a man be the "head" of a woman or his family if he doesn't control her and it? He cannot. And just how MUCH control is not something to be decided by amoral feminazis like Friedan. <<<But is it about all women ? The contexts do NOT say so. In both verses the word for "women" is "goo-nay" (or "wife") and the word for "man" is "an-aur" which means "husband".>>> <<<It is actually translated as "husband" in one verse, but not in the other, but this is shown in the Adam and Eve relationship mentioned in that verse>>> Agreed that there's no provision for single women: because Numbers 30 which Paul was quoting makes NO provision for single women to be granted legal rights. Agreed also that "goo-nay" has been translated as both "woman" and "wife", and agreed that it must mean one or the other. But your assertion that this verse applies only to wives, based on the putative "marriage" between Adam and Eve [a concept which didn't even exist at the time], is faulty. "goo-nay" must mean woman, not wife, and clearly Numbers 30 shows how all women are to be under the authority of A man--usually a husband or father, but sometimes a brother or another close male relative. All of Numbers will be included here because it's pertinent to some other serious errors:
Num 30:1 And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This [is] the thing which the LORD hath commanded. Num 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. Num 30:3 If a woman also vow a vow unto the LORD, and bind herself by a bond, [being] in her father's house in her youth; Num 30:4 And her father hear her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. Num 30:5 But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her. Num 30:6 And if she had at all an husband, when she vowed, or uttered ought out of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul; Num 30:7 And her husband heard [it,] and held his peace at her in the day that he heard [it]: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she bound her soul shall stand. Num 30:8 But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard [it]; then he shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the LORD shall forgive her. Num 30:9 But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her. Num 30:10 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath; Num 30:11 And her husband heard [it], and held his peace at her, [and] disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul shall stand. Num 30:12 But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard [them; then] whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and the LORD shall forgive her. Num 30:13 Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void. Num 30:14 But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which [are] upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard [them] . Num 30:15 But if he shall any ways make them void after that he hath heard [them] ; then he shall bear her iniquity. Num 30:16 These [are] the statutes, which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between the father and his daughter, [being yet] in her youth in her father's house.
<<<So in both verses Scripture refine the women concerned down married women only . We can see this in the second verse where it talks about the wife being saved in childbirth. A single woman does not have a husband to have children with. There is no evidence that these two passages refer to single women, even in a future potential manner.>>> <<<Biblical marriage in its real meaning is not established without witnesses to a covenant>>> Because of morons like Betty Friedan and her band of feminazis, who God HATES to His Marrow [whose phallic symbols, or "groves" God commanded the Israelites to pound to DUST] most women in the US who have children do NOT have husbands. But you, of all people Arnold, know that "marriage" doesn't require a ceremony, or even a vow from a woman [a vow which she can't even take unless her husband or father allows it]:
If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. Unless her father "utterly refuse[s]", a man who has sex with a woman must "endow" [read: marry] her. <<<It says exactly nothing about women being subject to other men than her husband here.>>>
Which is why you must refer to Numbers 30 which DOES say something about other men, and many of those other men are not husbands, which is why "goo-nay" must be a reference to any "woman" and not just a "wife".
<<<Historically, husbands and wives sat on opposite sides of the meeting place>>> Chapter & verse, please. I've never heard such a preposterous thing, never saw a single verse which says that, never personally witnessed it in any place I've ever been in the entire world, and can imagine it to be true only in sinagogues. I also can't imagine how it would cause such a reaction, but have seen many unruly, noisome women in churches who this should and most likely does apply to. <<<and Paul prohibited wives from calling out to their husbands to ask questions, but to wait until they were at home to do it >>> Where does Paul get such authority? Paul was simply quoting Scripture as he always did, not creating new law or changing God's Law. <<<Asking husbands at home says absolutely nothing about praying, praising and prophesying in public.>>> You of all people KNOW, Arnold, that the word "ekklesia" which you infer in your article means only "church" is used numerous times, by Paul himself, to refer to any public meeting, so your disingenuity here is, well, exposed for all to see and witness. What else can I say about that--you know you're wrong the instant you pen it. There's no provision for "single" women to even BE in church, much less have rights & privileges denied to married women. <<<Subjection to a husband is not to be the result of a wife being terrorized!>>> <<<The essence of this passage can be seen in the word "silence">>> No, the essence is "have no authority" & "obedience", which is translated from "hupotasso", which is defined as follows:
hupotasso, hoop-ot-as'-so, From G5259 and G5021; to subordinate; reflexively to obey: - be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto. Would you say that "reflexively to obey" would appear to be a Greek military term? If so, as an ex-military officer, I can knowledgeably advise you that "reflexively obey" does not even begin to imply "terrorized", as these are two different and almost opposite reactions or emotions. You cannot reflexively obey if you're terrorized.
Is there a difference between "superiority" and "authority
over"?
woman: 802 'ishshah ish-shaw' feminine of 376 or 582; irregular plural, nashiym {naw-sheem'}; a woman (used in the same wide sense as 582):--(adulter)ess, each, every, female, X many, + none, one, + together, wife, woman. Often unexpressed in English. husband: 376 'iysh eesh contracted for 582 (or perhaps rather from an unused root meaning to be extant); a man as an individual or a male person; often used as an adjunct to a more definite term (and in such cases frequently not expressed in translation):--also, another, any (man), a certain, + champion, consent, each, every (one), fellow, (foot-, husband-)man, (good-, great, mighty) man, he, high (degree), him (that is), husband, man(-kind), + none, one, people, person, + steward, what (man) soever, whoso(-ever), worthy. Compare 802.An unmarried woman who has sex outside of marriage is always referred to as a "whore", "harlot", "fornicator", or "prostitute" in the Holy Bible. Whenever it makes a reference to only a "woman", it automatically assumes that we understand this to be a reference to a married woman--even though the strict translation could mean just any woman. It refers to an unmarried woman who does not have sex outside of marriage, and who is under the authority of her father, as a "virgin", and to any woman who has sex with anyone other than her husband, divorced or not, as an "adulteress". The punishment for an "adulteress" is stoning. "Whores", "harlots", "fornicators", and "prostitutes are not welcome in the church:
HULDAH 2 KINGS 22:14
(2Ki 22:14) So Hilkiah2518 the priest3548, and Ahikam296, and Achbor5907, and Shaphan8227, and Asahiah6222, went3212 unto Huldah2468 the prophetess5031, the wife802 of Shallum7967 the son1121 of Tikvah8616, the son1121 of Harhas2745, keeper8104 of the wardrobe899; (now she dwelt3427 in Jerusalem3389 in the college4932;) and they communed1696 with her. wardrobe: Heb. garments in the...: or, in the second part5031 nbiy'ah neb-ee-yaw' feminine of 5030; a prophetess or (generally) inspired woman; by implication, a poetess; by association a prophet's wife:--prophetess. Huldah was called a "prophetess" because she was the wife of a prophet, and there's no evidence that she ever taught or had authority over a man. PRISCILLA--ACTS 18:24-26 Meggie asked "Why did Paul praise a woman minister?" with reference to the following Scripture: (Acts 18:24-26 KJV) "And a certain Jew named Apollos...came to Ephesus...{26}...whom...Aquila and Priscilla...expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly." while ignoring that Priscilla was not a minister, but instead was the wife of a jew (Aquila) who had been expelled from Rome: In other words, she was under the authority of her husband Aquila, who is thus one of those whom "if they want to learn anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is improper for a woman to speak in the church". There is not a shred of evidence in the Holy Bible that Priscilla ever violated this rule in a church or synagogue. PHOEBE--ROMANS 16:1 She then ask "Why would Paul say women can't speak and then say they can and boast of one teaching Apollos and stay with an evangelist whose daughters prophesied and laud a woman minister?" and referenced the following Scripture: (Darby) Romans 16:1 But I commend to you Phoebe, our sister, who is minister of the assembly which is in Cenchrea; There are only two references to Phoebe in
the Holy Bible, and they both refer to her as a "servant" rather than a
"minister": The following verse shows that she was a "servant" who acted as a messenger to deliver Paul's letters from Rome to Corinth, not that she was a "minister" who violated 1 Corinthians 14:34-35:
The fact that Paul took the time to thank Phebe for delivering his messages for him in no way indicates, proves, or even hints that she ever violated 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 by speaking or having authority in a church, assembly, or synagogue, but instead proves that she did NOT. Who could really think Paul would have taken the time to write about Phebe if she had ever spoken in a church or synagogue? We know that his *written* position has been translated, read, and understood by more human beings than any other publication on Earth, so why would feminists be so desperate to try to fool everyone with such an unwarranted presumption? ANNA--LUKE 2:36 Anna has been referenced by some as a woman who was permitted to speak before an assembly or church meeting, but the following Scripture indicates that she was speaking to potential converts to Christianity personally rather than before an assembly. She was an 84 year old widow, which means that she was not a "prostitute", "fornicator", "whore", nor "harlot": (Luk 2:36) And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, she was much advanced in days, having lived with an husband seven years from her virginity, (Luk 2:37) and she is a widow of about eighty-four years, who did depart not from the temple, with fasts and supplications serving, night and day, (Luk 2:38) and she, at that hour, having come in, was confessing, likewise, to the Lord, and was speaking concerning him, to all those looking for redemption in Jerusalem. Being a prophet or prophetess does not require one to speak before an assembly, because this could involve only "one gifted with more than ordinary spiritual and moral insight". By no means does this even imply that Anna violated the rules of the church:
1 Corinthians 14:34 The literal translation from Greek "Keep your women silent in assemblies, because they are never permitted to utter; indeed, they must obey according even to the law. Moreover, if they wish to understand, they must ask their husbands at home, because it is a disgrace for women to utter in an assembly." The tone of the following translations differ from the tone of the original Holy Bible: DARBY: Let [your] women be silent in the assemblies, for it is not permitted to them to speak; but to be in subjection, as the law also says. But if they wish to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in assembly. KJV: Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. NKJV: Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. YLT: Your women in the assemblies let them be silent, for it hath not been permitted to them to speak, but to be subject, as also the law saith; and if they wish to learn anything, at home their own husbands let them question, for it is a shame to women to speak in an assembly. RSV: For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.
Wednesday, September 22, 2004 8:09 PM There is something wrong with it, it goes against Jewish law. In fact it is because it is FOR WOMEN that there is this law. It is a *feminist law* - women do NOT have to do time bound mitzvahs. Men only have to. Women are considered HIGHER developed souls and therefore are not required to. Judaism is a very feminist religion - for those who do not understand why certain laws are made like this, they think it is against women, IT ISN'T! -- Joni Ferris
At 05:26 AM 8/23/01 -0700, Andy wrote: As a member here, she and you have the same right to speak and debate or present ideas as everyone else. Perhaps it would help to know that 1 Tim 2:12 (suffer not a woman to teach) is part of a letter to a local Pastor from Paul, telling him how to organize his Christian Church. Hi Andy, I have watched this discussion, with no true debate on the issue. It seems that it's so volatile that people want to force this issue without benefit of Biblical exegesis. I thought I might give what I understand is being taught in 1 Tim 2:12. If anyone disagrees, I would appreciate their input in aiding my understanding of this subject. When I view a passage, especially one such as this one, that causes so much disagreement among the brethren, I have to take it in the context of the entire Bible. In this case, Do we have examples of other teachings that would contradict the 1 Tim 2:11-12 teaching if it is to be taken at face value? I would have to say yes! Some commentators on the Bible will admit that to take these verses literally tend to make Paul contradict himself. The passage of 1 tim 2:11-12 tends to be taken in tandem with 1 Cor 14:34-35 even though the word "silence" in both passages are not the same Greek word nor do they have the same definition. But when commenting on the meaning of another Paulinean statement, 1 Cor 11:5, many commentators have a dilemma. They realize and admit there appears to be a problem because that verse does say that a woman can speak in assembly.
Teach versus Prophesy
It has been posited that the scripture which permits women to "pray or prophesy with her head covered" also includes permission for women to "teach", but there are 108 references in the Holy Bible to "teach", which include eleven different, very precise Greek and Hebrew words TEACH
Exo 18:20 And thou shalt teach2094 853 them ordinances2706 and laws8451, and shalt shew3045 them the way1870 wherein they must walk3212, and the work4639 that they must do6213. 2094 zahar zaw-har' a primitive root; to gleam; figuratively, to enlighten (by caution):--admonish, shine, teach, (give) warn(-ing).
