The Missing "Bottom
Line"
The following GDP and Savings data from the Bottom
Line section of the July 19th, 1996 issue of Asia Week shows Japan's savings to be 33% of
GDP, versus 15% in the US. While this issue can be seen in its original format at http://www.asiaweek.com/asiaweek/96/0719/index.html
, the Bottom Line sections for all issues prior to 1998 are no longer available on the
internet.
The following urls show that Japan's savings rate
varied between 30-34% of GDP since then:

Compiled from latest available data. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the value of all
goods and services produced in one year. Purchasing-Power Parity (PPP) takes into account
price differences between countries to provide a more accurate picture of national wealth.
GDP growth is adjusted for inflation. Gross National Product (GNP) is GDP plus payments
from abroad from investments, labor and minus similar payments to foreigners. Per-capita
GNP is converted to U.S. dollars using average exchange rates. Net creditor.
