Gune: woman, or wife?
Ye shall not add unto the
word which I command you, neither
shall ye diminish aught from
it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you,
Deuteronomy 4:2
It's been argued that
the following verse about women not speaking in an "ekklesia", and not having
authority over or teaching a man, applies only to wives and not to whores, widows and
virgins. However, every one of the following 13 translators agreed that the correct
rendering is "woman" and not "wife":
1Ti 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in
silence.
1Ti 2:12
(ASV) But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness.
(BBE) In my opinion it is right for a woman not to be a teacher, or to have rule over a
man, but to be quiet.
(CEV) They should be silent and not be allowed to teach or to
tell men what to do.
(Darby) but I do not suffer a woman to teach nor to exercise authority over man,
but to be in quietness;
(DRB) But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to use authority over the man: but to be in silence.
(GB) I permit not a woman to teache, neither to vsurpe authoritie ouer the man, but to be in silence.
(GNB) I do not allow them to teach or to have authority over men;
they must keep quiet.
(KJV) But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the
man, but to be in silence.
(KJV+) But1161 I suffer2010 not3756 a woman1135

(KJVA) But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the
man, but to be in silence.
(LITV) And I do not allow a woman to teach nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in silence.
(RSV) I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent.
(WEB) But I don't permit a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over
a man, but to be in quietness.
(YLT) and a woman I do not suffer to teach, nor to rule a husband, but to be in quietness,
Furthermore, in Matthew 5:28,
the red letter part of the Holy Bible (the part that's a direct quotation from Jesus),
Jesus warns us to not lust after a woman, and all 13 translators again agree that this
certainly cannot be restricted only to wives:
Mat 5:28
(ASV) but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman
to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
(BBE) But I say to you that everyone whose eyes are turned on a
woman with desire has had connection with her in his heart.
(CEV) But I tell you that if you look at another woman and want
her, you are already unfaithful in your thoughts.
(Darby) But *I* say unto you, that every one who looks upon a
woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
(DRB) But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to
lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.
(GB) But I say vnto you, that whosoeuer looketh on a woman to
lust after her, hath committed adulterie with her already in his heart.
(GNB) But now I tell you: anyone who looks at a woman and wants
to possess her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart.

(LITV) But I say to you, Everyone looking at a woman to lust
after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
(RSV) But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman
lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
(WEB) but I tell you that
everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in
his heart.
(YLT) but I--I say to you, that every one who is looking on a
woman to desire her, did already commit adultery with her in his heart.
Furthermore, in the following
verse, a widow is referred to as a "gune", illustrating that it doesn't always
apply only to wives:
Luk 4:26 But unto none of them was Elijah sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
