Hebrews 9
A comparison of various recent translations of the Holy Bible with
the King James Version provides the opportunity to sort out the biases and prejudices of
all the translators, including the recent ones. Their tendency to add words which
fit their individual agendas which were never there in the first place has never been made
more clear than it is in Hebrews 9 which judeochristians proclaim does away with
"sacrificial laws" or "animal sacrifice" [read: God's Law, or the
Torah].
Nothing could be further from the truth. A close, objective
examination of the Scripture shows that the author of Hebrews never intended to abolish
God's Law, and those who claim he did make a mockery of our intelligence.
There are many words added to all translations which confuse the
issue and expose the various biases, but focusing only on whether or not Christ intended
to abolish God's Law, or whether or not the author of Hebrews intended to disobey Christ's
Commandments, the following statements become key:
Heb
9:13 for if the blood of bulls, and goats, and ashes of
an heifer, sprinkling those defiled, doth sanctify to the purifying of the flesh,
Heb 9:14 how much more shall the blood
of the Christ (who through the age-during Spirit did offer himself unblemished to God)
purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
It cannot be presumed from such a statement that either Christ nor
the author of Hebrews intended to do away with "the purifying of the flesh".
What must be understood is that Christ added an additional requirement to those who
believe in Him, which is to "purify your
conscience". Since it is stated that God's remedy for
"purifying the flesh" is valid, it cannot be assumed that adding a requirement
to "purify the conscience" eliminates the need to "purify the flesh".
The most egregious translation was from Hebrews 9:12 in the
Contemporary English Version:
Then Christ went once for all into the most holy place and freed us from
sin forever. He did this by offering his own blood instead of the blood of goats and
bulls.
Compare that to the King James Version, the Literal Translation of
the Bible, and Young's Literal Translation:
Neither3761 by1223 the blood129 of goats5131 and2532 calves,3448 but1161 by1223 his own2398 blood129 he entered
in1525 once2178 into1519 the3588 holy place,39 having
obtained2147 eternal166 redemption3085 for us.
nor through the blood of goats and of calves, but through His own blood, He entered once for all into the Holy of Holies, having procured
everlasting redemption.
neither through blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood,
did enter in once into the holy places, age-during redemption having obtained;
The KJV translators began the disinformation campaign with
this Scripture when they added "for us" [note the italics], because this
redemption was not for us, but for the ancestors of those who lived during Christ's time.
This was the payment of debts retroactively, rather than in the future, to our age.
Even if you argued that "for us" belongs there, you must come to terms
with who "us" was--it was Christ's contemporaries and their ancestors, not us,
their posterity.

Contemporary English Version
Heb 9:1 The first promise that was
made included rules for worship and a tent for worship here on earth.
Heb 9:2 The first part of
the tent was called the holy place, and a lampstand, a table, and the sacred loaves of
bread were kept there.
Heb 9:3 Behind the curtain
was the most holy place.
Heb 9:4 The gold altar that
was used for burning incense was in this holy place. The gold-covered sacred chest was
also there, and inside it were three things. First, there was a gold jar filled with
manna. Then there was Aaron's walking stick that sprouted. Finally, there were the flat
stones with the Ten Commandments written on them.
Heb 9:5 On top of the chest
were the glorious creatures with wings opened out above the place of mercy. Now isn't the
time to go into detail about these things.
Heb 9:6 But this is how
everything was when the priests went each day into the first part of the tent to do their
duties.
Heb 9:7 However, only the
high priest could go into the second part of the tent, and he went in only once a year.
Each time he carried blood to offer for his sins and for any sins that the people had
committed without meaning to.
Heb 9:8 All of this is the
Holy Spirit's way of saying that no one could enter the most holy place while the tent was
still the place of worship.
Heb 9:9 This also has a
meaning for today. It shows that we cannot make our consciences clear by offering gifts
and sacrifices.
Heb 9:10 These rules are
merely about such things as eating and drinking and ceremonies for washing ourselves. And
rules about physical things will last only until the time comes to change them for
something better.
Heb 9:11 Christ came as the
high priest of the good things that are now here. He also went into a much better tent
that wasn't made by humans and that doesn't belong to this world.
Heb 9:12 Then Christ went
once for all into the most holy place and freed us from sin forever. He did this by
offering his own blood instead of the blood of goats and bulls.
Heb 9:13 According to the
Law of Moses, those people who become unclean are not fit to worship God. Yet they will be
considered clean, if they are sprinkled with the blood of goats and bulls and with the
ashes of a sacrificed calf.
Heb 9:14 But Christ was
sinless, and he offered himself as an eternal and spiritual sacrifice to God. That's why
his blood is much more powerful and makes our consciences clear. Now we can serve the
living God and no longer do things that lead to death.
Heb 9:15 Christ died to
rescue those who had sinned and broken the old agreement. Now he brings his chosen ones a
new agreement with its guarantee of God's eternal blessings!
Heb 9:16 In fact, making an
agreement of this kind is like writing a will. This is because the one who makes the will
must die before it is of any use.
Heb 9:17 In other words, a
will doesn't go into effect as long as the one who made it is still alive.
Heb 9:18 Blood was also
used to put the first agreement into effect.
Heb 9:19 Moses told the
people all that the Law said they must do. Then he used red wool and a hyssop plant to
sprinkle the people and the book of the Law with the blood of bulls and goats and with
water.
Heb 9:20 He told the
people, "With this blood God makes his agreement with you."
Heb 9:21 Moses also
sprinkled blood on the tent and on everything else that was used in worship.
Heb 9:22 The Law says that
almost everything must be sprinkled with blood, and no sins can be forgiven unless blood
is offered.
Heb 9:23 These things are
only copies of what is in heaven, and so they had to be made holy by these ceremonies. But
the real things in heaven must be made holy by something better.
Heb 9:24 This is why Christ
did not go into a tent that had been made by humans and was only a copy of the real one.
Instead, he went into heaven and is now there with God to help us.
Heb 9:25 Christ did not
have to offer himself many times. He wasn't like a high priest who goes into the most holy
place each year to offer the blood of an animal.
Heb 9:26 If he had offered
himself every year, he would have suffered many times since the creation of the world. But
instead, near the end of time he offered himself once and for all, so that he could be a
sacrifice that does away with sin.
Heb 9:27 We die only once,
and then we are judged.
Heb 9:28 So Christ died
only once to take away the sins of many people. But when he comes again, it will not be to
take away sin. He will come to save everyone who is waiting for him.
Literal Translation of the Bible
Heb 9:1 Truly, then, the first covenant also had ordinances of
service, and the earthly holy place.
Heb 9:2 For the first
tabernacle was prepared, in which was both the lampstand and the table, and the setting out of the loaves, which is
called holy.
Heb 9:3 But behind the
second veil is a
tabernacle, being called Holy of Holies,
Heb 9:4 having a golden
altar of incense, and the ark of the covenant covered around on all sides with gold, in
which was the golden
pot having the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant;
Heb 9:5 and above it the cherubs of glory overshadowing
the mercy-seat (about which now is not enough
time to speak piece by piece).
Heb 9:6 And these having
been prepared thus, the priests go into the first tabernacle through all, completing the
services.
Heb 9:7 But into the second
the high priest goes
alone once in the year,
not without blood, which he offers for himself and the ignorances of the people;
Heb 9:8 the Holy Spirit
signifying by this that the way of the Holy of Holies has not yet been made
manifest, the first tabernacle still having been standing;
Heb 9:9 which was a parable for the present time,
according to which both gifts and sacrifices are offered, but as regards conscience, not being able to
perfect the one
serving,
Heb 9:10 but only on foods
and drinks, and various washings, and fleshly ordinances, until the time of setting things right has been
imposed.
Heb 9:11 But Christ having
appeared as a High
Priest of the coming good things, through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made
with hands, that is, not of this creation,
Heb 9:12 nor through the
blood of goats and of calves, but through His own blood, He
entered once for all into the Holy of Holies, having procured everlasting redemption.
Heb 9:13 For if the blood
of bulls and goats, and ashes of a heifer sprinkling those having been defiled, sanctifies
to the purity of the flesh,
Heb 9:14 by how much more
the blood of Christ (who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God), will purify your
conscience from dead works, to serve the living God!
Heb 9:15 And because of
this He is Mediator of a new covenant, so that, death having occurred for redemption of
transgressions under the first covenant, those being called might receive the promise of
the everlasting inheritance.
Heb 9:16 For where a
covenant is, the death
of him having covenanted must be offered.
Heb 9:17 For a covenant is affirmed over those dead, since it never has force
when he who has covenanted is living.
Heb 9:18 From which neither
the first covenant was
dedicated without blood.
Heb 9:19 For when every command had been spoken
according to Law by Moses to all the people, having taken the blood of the calves and
goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and he sprinkled both the scroll and all
the people,
Heb 9:20 saying, "This
is the blood of the
covenant which God enjoined to you." Ex.
24:8
Heb 9:21 And he likewise
sprinkled both the tabernacle and all the service vessels with the blood.
Heb 9:22 And almost all
things are purified by blood according to the Law; and apart from shedding of blood no
remission occurs.
Heb 9:23 Then it was needful for the figures of
the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these; but the heavenly things themselves by better sacrifices than these.
Heb 9:24 For Christ did not
enter into the Holy of Holies made by hands, types
of the true things, but into Heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our
behalf,
Heb 9:25 not that He should
often offer Himself even as the high priest enters into the Holy of Holies year by year with blood of
others;
Heb 9:26 since He must
often have suffered from the foundation of the world. But now once for all, at the completion of the ages, He
has been manifested for putting away of sin through the sacrifice of Himself.
Heb 9:27 And as it is
reserved to men once to die, and after this, Judgment;
Heb 9:28 so Christ having been
once offered "to bear the sins of many," Christ shall appear a second time without sin to those expecting Him for
salvation. Isa. 53:12
Young's Literal Translation
Heb 9:1 It had, indeed, then (even
the first tabernacle) ordinances of service, also a worldly sanctuary,
Heb 9:2 for a tabernacle
was prepared, the first, in which was both the lamp-stand, and the table, and the bread of
the presence--which is called `Holy;'
Heb 9:3 and after the
second vail a tabernacle that is called `Holy of holies,'
Heb 9:4 having a golden
censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid all round about with gold, in which is the golden pot having the manna,
and the rod of Aaron that budded, and the tables of the covenant,
Heb 9:5 and over it
cherubim of the glory, overshadowing the mercy-seat, concerning which we are not now to
speak particularly.
Heb 9:6 And these things
having been thus prepared, into the first tabernacle, indeed, at all times the priests do
go in, performing the services,
Heb 9:7 and into the
second, once in the year, only the chief priest, not apart from blood, which he doth offer
for himself and the errors of the people,
Heb 9:8 the Holy Spirit
this evidencing that not yet hath been manifested the way of the holy places , the first tabernacle having
yet a standing;
Heb 9:9 which is a simile in regard to the present
time, in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered, which are not able, in regard to
conscience, to make perfect him who is serving,
Heb 9:10 only in victuals,
and drinks, and different baptisms, and fleshly ordinances--till the time of reformation
imposed upon them .
Heb 9:11 And Christ being
come, chief priest of the coming good things, through the greater and more perfect
tabernacle not made with hands--that is, not of this creation--
Heb 9:12 neither through
blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood, did enter in once into the holy
places, age-during redemption having obtained;
Heb 9:13 for if the blood
of bulls, and goats, and ashes of an heifer, sprinkling those defiled, doth sanctify to
the purifying of the flesh,
Heb 9:14 how much more
shall the blood of the Christ (who through the age-during Spirit did offer himself
unblemished to God) purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Heb 9:15 And because of
this, of a new covenant he is mediator, that, death having come, for redemption of the
transgressions under the first covenant, those called may receive the promise of the
age-during inheritance,
Heb 9:16 for where a
covenant is , the death
of the covenant-victim to come in is necessary,
Heb 9:17 for a covenant
over dead victims is
stedfast, since it is no force at all when the covenant-victim liveth,
Heb 9:18 whence not even
the first apart from blood hath been initiated,
Heb 9:19 for every command
having been spoken, according to law, by Moses, to all the people, having taken the blood
of the calves and goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, he both the book itself
and all the people did sprinkle,
Heb 9:20 saying, `This is the blood of the covenant that
God enjoined unto you,'
Heb 9:21 and both the
tabernacle and all the vessels of the service with blood in like manner he did sprinkle,
Heb 9:22 and with blood
almost all things are purified according to the law, and apart from blood-shedding
forgiveness doth not come.
Heb 9:23 It is necessary, therefore, the
pattern indeed of the things in the heavens to be purified with these, and the heavenly
things themselves with better sacrifices than these;
Heb 9:24 for not into holy
places made with hands did the Christ enter--figures of the true--but into the heaven
itself, now to be manifested in the presence of God for us;
Heb 9:25 nor that he may
many times offer himself, even as the chief priest doth enter into the holy places every
year with blood of others;
Heb 9:26 since it had
behoved him many times to suffer from the foundation of the world, but now once, at the
full end of the ages, for putting away of sin through his sacrifice, he hath been
manifested;
Heb 9:27 and as it is laid
up to men once to die, and after this--judgment,
Heb 9:28 so also the
Christ, once having been offered to bear the sins of many, a second time, apart from a
sin-offering, shall appear, to those waiting for him--to salvation!
