Summary of December Survey Results

(1) Expenditure for All Households
         The average monthly living expenditure per household for December 1997 was 
    406,283 yen, down 3.3% in nominal and 5.0% in real terms from the previous year.

(2) Income and Expenditure for Workers' Households 
         The average monthly income per household stood at 1,189,572 yen, up 0.2% in
    nominal but down 1.6% in real terms from the previous year.
         Living expenditure was 441,305 yen, down 3.1% in nominal terms and 4.8% in
    real terms from the previous year.
