accounts data, which are estimated using a variety of basic statistics, and the date of
publication of the national accounts depends on those basic statistics. It is impossible
to obtain essential basic statistics earlier than is currently done. Moreover, there are
no other statistics that serve as appropriate substitutes. Japan is therefore taking a
flexibility option for the timeliness of the general government operations data, and will
continue to publish the data with a timeliness of eight months. |
| 5/ It is impossible to obtain data until after 7 months following
completion of the fiscal year being reported. Japan will therefore employ a timeliness
flexibility for this data category, and will continue to publish the figures after a
period of 8 months has elapsed. Besides, data are processed and released only annually.
Japan will therefore employ a periodicity flexibility for this data category, and will
continue to publish the figures every November. |
| 6/ Non-marketable government bonds are generally redeemable on
demand or on an installment plan. Non-marketable government bonds are not included in the
classification of outstanding debt by maturity (see the DSBB). |
| 7/ The classification by original maturity applies only to markable bonds and Fiscal
Loan Fund Special Account Bonds, respectively.(see the DSBB). |
| 8/ As Japan has an extensive branch banking system, the data on
money stocks and total credit are available within one month. (The breakdown of credit to
government [which includes data on credit to the non-financial public enterprises] and
credit to the private sector is available in the monetary survey which is disseminated
through the website of the Bank of Japan and in the "Financial and Economic
Statistics Monthly", normally with a lag of two months. The data on the external
position of the banking sector are disseminated 6-7 weekes after the reference month.) In
view of the existence of an extensive branch banking system, Japan intends to make use of
the "as relevant" provision of the SDDS and will continue to disseminate data on
the analytical accounts of the banking sector with the present timeliness. |
| 9/The coverage of *Loans and discounts by commercial banks (City
Banks, Long-term Credit Banks, Trust Banks, Regional Banks, Regional Banks II and Foreign
Banks) is narrower than that of the monetary survey. |
| 10/The data include claims on nonfinancial public enterprises.
Loans and discounts by commercial banks are the equivalent of total credit (total claims).

| 11/Japanese government securities (including Japanese government
short-term securities) in Bank of Japan Accounts. The data include claims on nonfinancial

| 16/3-month forward rate can be available by subtracting forward
spread (d (dollar discount)) from spot rate or adding forward spread (p (dollar premium))
to spot rate. Daily data are disseminated in the Bank of Japan's press release
"Gaikoku Kawase Shikyo". |
| 17/Final data are disseminated through the Internet website of
