The following table is from
page 47 of "Japan in Figures 2003" which can be downloaded from http://www.stat.go.jp/english/data/figures/pdf/2003f.pdf
This Japanese government
report excludes Japanese personal savings in the semi-private postal savings accounts, and
it may exclude year end bonuses which can be as much as 100% of the annual salary.
These official statistics show
that the average Japanese worker's household has personal savings of 13.6 million yen,
which at 120 yen to the dollar is $113,000. Annual income is $64,125, liabilities
are $48,317, and loans on houses and land are $121,708. For multi-person households
alone, total assets are $365,583, which includes $74,583 in financial assets and $225,167
in houses and land, and annual income is $63,417.
This appears to be a very conservative estimate even considering that savings in postal
savings accounts and year end bonuses aren't included.
