Not so fast there, lady justice!

What exactly do you mean by "my responsibilities"? Are you suggesting that your retirement is punishment enough for a "crime" which caused 260,000 American men to be IMPRISONED, thanks almost exclusively to moronic legal "minds" like yours?

Are you suggesting that because you were a judge and a woman, that your only punishment should be that you "retire", as 260,000 American MEN who violated DUI laws (most of them having not even struck "urban equipment" as you did) remain in prison?

If you truly believe "all citizens are equal before the law", then either you need to act FAST to remove these falsely convicted MEN, or you need to lodge yourself into prison for a term that's LONGER than the longest sentence you caused to be issued to a MAN who violated this "DUI law" (but didn't strike "urban equipment" or anything else).

This is the ONLY way you can re-establish justice, lady justice. NOTHING LESS is acceptable.

Show us your mettle, lady justice. Check the record and tell us how much time a MAN spends in prison JUST for violating this "law", and nothing else. Then sentence yourself to a term that's at least as long as the longest sentence issued for this "crime". Don't take any special privileges if you truly believe "all citizens are equal before the law", lady justice. SERVE the time you sentence yourself to, in a facility equivalent to one that these 260,000 MEN are currently lodged in.

Do not use your privileged position to avoid this responsibility, lady justice. If you REALLY believe in justice, then serve justice on yourself. If you believe that you're a privileged person, then you'll continue to characterize your own crimes as "unfortunate", at the same time that you consider men who violate DUI laws as "criminals".

Obviously, the charges against the former Chief Justice were skewed in her favour to begin with.

I don't believe it.......This is atrocious, simply disgusting and everybody should know about it.

It is concerning Chief Justice Lyse Lemieux in Quebec, Canada.

She has resigned her position after receiving a citation for, get this, "Driving a motor vehicle with weakened faculties and an alcohol rating over the allowed level." (By the way, she had the weakened faculties and high alcohol rating, not the car....)

She apparently struck a piece of 'urban equipment' and 'got caught'.         Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...!

Justice Lemieux pointed out, however, that "the incident involved no one else and that no one was injured". So I guess that makes it quite a little bit more palatable. Am I really hearing this right?

Please remember to tell any inebriated driver (you may run into), or our traffic cops in the future, "Well it ain't so bad because no one was injured eh?"

Good Heavens, what is really the purpose of such a completely obnoxious and stupid statement?

I guess it was sheer luck that one of my family, or your family, was not standing next to that piece of "urban equipment" eh?

Chief Justice Lemieux should damned well know better and we should throw the book at her. I have no compassion for her whatsoever. She MUST be made an example of.

I sincerely hope that anyone with influence does not try to 'illegally' protect her.   What do they call that again??

Of course, that could never happen in this wonderful country called Canada, could it?

Another thing, no-one can convince me that she could have ever done anything like this before, EH? No, not on your 'nellie'........

    MONTREAL, Aug. 19 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Lyse Lemieux, Chief Justice of the Superior Court
of Quebec, announces her decision to leave her post and retire, following an event that she describes as "extremely
unfortunate" which took place in Montreal on August 5th, 2004. 
That day, after hitting an urban equipment item, she received a citation to appear before the Court for driving a 
motor vehicle with weakened faculties and an alcohol rating over the allowed level. 
Justice Lemieux would like to point out that the incident involved no one else and that no one was injured.
"After sitting as a judge for twenty years and six months, including almost ten years in management positions,

institution as the Superior Court. 
In addition, I am proud to have been the first woman to hold the position of Chief Justice. However, all citizens are
equal before the law and I am taking my responsibilities. 
At sixty eight years of age, I state that I have been involved in only one other unfortunate incident. 
In 2001 my driver's license was suspended for three months, as I had fifteen points of inaptitude due to the fact 
that I had unwittingly overtook a school bus on my way to the office in the morning.
    
"On the eve of the end of the annual recess of the courts, I am aware that my decision bears heavy consequences. 
Until I leave, I will therefore insure the proper administrative operation of the Court, but I will refrain from 
participating in any public event. As well, I will not participate in discussions involving the orientation of the 
Institution, whose integrity I so vividly wish to preserve in taking this decision."
Justice Lemieux is one of the rare justices with a public service background. 
As Superior Court Judge, she has worked in all areas of the law except criminal law, presiding especially over
cases of civil and administrative law. 
In the past, as Assistant Chief Justice, she worked closely with the Chief Justice of the time, the Honourable 
Lawrence Poitras, in order to diminish delays for hearings. 
She was appointed Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Quebec in August 1996. 
Justice Lemieux will leave her post as of September 30th, 2004.
