Jennifer SidersPhysics GREWhile a graduate student at UT I became concerned about the low number of women entering the department and began investigating the use of the Physics GRE at UT. There is a substantial gender gap (close to 100 points) in the scores as well as a large gap between American and foreign students. There is also very little correlation between Undergraduate GPA and Physics GRE, with the GPA giving more of an upper limit on a student's Physics GRE score. An informal survey over the internet was also performed. With the results of this research and the help of Prof. Linda Reichl, the Physics GRE requirement of 700 for candidacy is no longer used at the University of Texas at Austin. Though the exam is still required for admissions no minimum score is required. I gave an invited talk on this subject at the Joint APS/AAPT meeting in Indianapolis, May 4, 1996.
