These statues date back to at least 700 AD, and most likely much earlier than that.

So the guns in their hands are not modern weapons.  These are ancient weapons, proof that an advanced civilization once had firearms, and most likely "weapons of mass destruction" which they used to to destroy themselves, and perhaps sink Atlantis.

The Asian man standing next to the statues shows that they are three times life size, or that the Atlanteans were three times our size [read: giants?].
